A Song of Houston: Celebrating the City's Immigrant Communities Two Tuesdays, October 30 and November 6 (these classes are cancelled), 1:00–2:30 p.m. Czech Cultural Center, 4920 San Jacinto at Wichita (in the Museum District) One Saturday, November 10, 7:30 p.m. (this performance will still take place) Brown Theater, Wortham Center (performance tickets purchased separately) How is a piece of operatic music created? Houston Grand Opera is celebrating the city of Houston and those who call it home with a joyous and moving commissioned oratorio written by poet Leah Lax and Greek American composer Christopher Theofanidis, both Houstonians. They will tell the stories of people from the African, Central American, Indian/Pakistani, Russian Jewish, Mexican, and Vietnamese communities of our city. During the fall, Houston Grand Opera will take each of the six acts to the community in which it originated. Subscribers to this course are invited to attend as many of these performances as they like. Please indicate on the registration form which community performances you would like to attend. October 30: (cancelled) Sue Elliot, the project director of the Houston Grand Opera, and representatives of the various immigrant communities will take us through the process of discovering the people who are depicted in the oratorio. November 6: (cancelled) Anthony Freud, the general director of the Houston Grand Opera, who was inspired in this commission by a woman who walked to Houston from El Salvador, will moderate a discussion with the librettist, Leah Lax, and the composer, Christopher Theofanidis. November 10: The Refuge: A Song of Houston will be presented in the Brown Theater of the Wortham Center by the Houston Grand Opera Orchestra, Chorus, and Children’s Chorus. Subscribers will have the option of attending a performance and may purchase from a special block of tickets being held by the HGO.
