A Window onto the History of East Texas: John Boles on Shelby County’s Colorful Past

Presented as an introduction to The Houston Seminar’s March study tour, this lecture might also interest the many fans of John Boles, who was born and raised in Center, Texas, the seat of Shelby County, which we will visit on our tour. Dr. Boles has extensive knowledge of his native county and will use its social, cultural, and political history as a window onto the colorful and often violent past of the entire East Texas region.

John Boles is the William P. Hobby Professor of American History at Rice University, editor of the Journal of Southern History, and a widely acclaimed speaker on many topics in American history.
