God, Time and History: A Study of Biblical Texts

How was the passage of time given meaning in the ancient world? What role was assigned to God in shaping the direction of events? Many biblical texts are best described as history that is intended to record events of major significance and to commit them to cultural memory.

Matthias Henze, assistant professor of religious studies at Rice University, will examine the writing of history in ancient Israel and in the early Church. He will examine the Biblical account of the Exodus, the portrait of King David, the Babylonian Exile, and the Book of Acts, the Gospels, and the biography of Jesus.

Subscribers may bring sack lunches; drinks will be provided. Citations to biblical texts will be sent with acknowledgement of enrollment.
