Magic in the Mountains: Art, Architecture, and Nature at Crystal Bridges
Join the Houston Seminar to explore art, architecture, and nature in the Ozark Mountains of northwestern Arkansas as we tour the new Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and other wonders in and around Bentonville.
Since well before its opening in November 2011, Crystal Bridges has received a wealth of international attention. Designed by Moshe Safdie and founded by Walmart heiress Alice Walton, the museum has an exceptional collection of American art dating from the eighteenth century to the present day. Surrounding it are 3.5 miles of trails winding around and through streams, ponds, wetlands, and native plants and enhanced by permanent installations by sculptors including Mark di Suvero and James Turrell.
Sandy Edwards, the museum’s deputy director, will be our guide.
We will also explore the Thornwood Chapel, designed by Fay Jones, in the woods at nearby Bella Vista and will be guests in a private house to tour the owner’s art collection. Overnight we will stay at the new five-star 21c Museum Hotel Bentonville, a luxury hotel with rotating art exhibitions.
After a Thursday-morning flight from Houston to Tulsa, the tour group will arrive in Bentonville via motor coach in time for lunch at Crystal Bridges. We will arrive back in Houston on Friday afternoon.
