At the center of these three books are two families, the Ameses and the Boughtons. The Rev. John Ames is in his seventies, with a heart condition, and writes Gilead as an autobiography for his twelve-year-old son by his second marriage. He is a spiritual man who writes also about the doubt that informs his faith and the “radiance of being.” Home centers on Jack, the prodigal son of the Boughton family, who is also Ames’s godson. Jack’s father says he has tried to keep from loving his son too much, a burden that Jack’s sister Glory also bears in dealing with her destructive, charismatic brother. Lila is the story of John Ames’s much younger wife, an orphan who had been “adopted” by a drifter named Doll. Lila had only primitive language and an undeveloped sense of self when she entered Ames’s life by accident. Ms. Robinson’s prose is always “beautiful” and “grave,” but in Lila it has a virtuosity reminiscent of Faulkner in The Sound and the Fury and As I Lay Dying. There is no higher praise for these compelling, unforgettable stories. Terrence Doody will begin the course with Robinson’s first novel, Housekeeping (1980), and follow her evolution as a writer through the Gilead Trilogy.

Terrence Doody is professor emeritus at Rice University. He joined the Rice faculty in 1970 where he taught courses on modernism, the novel, and contemporary literature in the department of English. During his tenure at Rice, he received several prestigious teaching awards.
