New York in the Twentieth-Century Novel

Terrence Doody, Professor of English at Rice University, will interpret the depictions of New York in The Age of Innocence, The Great Gatsby, Manhattan Transfer, Mr. Sammler's Planet, and Jazz. We will discuss issues raised by these novels – America's relations with Europe, the changing role of women, questions of race, and the nature of community within the city.
