Russia’s Past and Prospects
Does Russian culture hinder the development of democracy? Have centuries of authoritarian rule created a cultural deficit that precludes democratic governance in the “new Russia”? This series will consider different facets of these questions by examining broad social attitudes in Russia, historical legacies of the Soviet period the emerging youth culture, and the music of two Soviet-era composers.
