The Rise of the Post-Civil War South
John Boles of the history department at Rice University will describe the South's rise from defeat, underdevelopment and poverty to industrial and agricultural leadership and political power. He will examine four crucial developments in the South between the Civil War and the 1970's: the effects of the Civil War and Reconstruction, the nadir of southern race relations at the end of the nineteenth century, the effects of World War II on the region and changes wrought by the civil rights movement. John Boles is the William P. Hobby Professor of American History at Rice University and the managing editor of The Journal of Southern History.
