Virginia Woolf and Toni Morrison

Toni Morrison’s historical and political situation does not immediately bring to mind Virginia Woolf’s, but Woolf was a great influence on Morrison, who wrote her master’s thesis on Woolf and William Faulkner. The two women are interested in women’s lives – both in states of “ordinary” consciousness that are actually extraordinary and in the extremes of isolation or difference that constitute madness. Morrison has said that, whatever else her sentences are doing, they all have to be beautiful, as Woolf’s are.

Terrence Doody, the lecturer for this course, is a professor of English at Rice University. The books to be read and discussed are as follows:

September 17, Woolf, The Voyage Out;
October 1, Morrison, The Bluest Eye;
October 15, Woolf, Mrs. Dalloway;
October 29, Morrison, Sula;
November 12, Woolf, To the Lighthouse;
November 19, Morrison, Beloved.

Please note that there is one week between the last two classes. Subscribers may bring lunch to eat during class.
