Martha Serpas is a poet, a professor in the Creative Writing Program at the University of Houston, an advocate for wetland preservation, and a hospital chaplain. Since 2006, she has served at Tampa General Hospital, where she responds to trauma, end-of-life, and crisis situations, and to more general requests for spiritual support. Her poetry is grounded in her faith and her experiences in Cajun Louisiana. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker, The Nation, and Image: A Journal of the Arts and Religion, as well as in a number of anthologizes, including the Library of America’s American Religious Poems. She has taught at Yale Divinity School and the University of Tampa, where she served as poetry editor of Tampa Review. She holds degrees in English and creative writing from Louisiana State University, New York University, and the University of Houston, and a Master of Divinity from Yale Divinity School.
