W. Caleb McDaniel is professor of history at Rice University. He received his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in 2006 and his B.A. from Texas A&M University in 2000. His most recent book, Sweet Taste of Liberty: A True Story of Slavery and Restitution in America, published by Oxford University Press in 2019, was awarded the 2020 Pulitzer Prize in History and the Civil War and Reconstruction book prize from the Organization of American Historians. He is also the author of The Problem of Democracy in the Age of Slavery: Garrisonian Abolitionists and Transatlantic Reform (Louisiana State University Press, 2013)
