John Fairey (1930-2020) was professor of design at Texas A&M University, and a gardener of international renown. He founded Peckerwood Garden (now the John Fairey Garden) near Hempstead in 1971, bringing it to 39 acres from its original seven. In 1998, Peckerwood was designated a Preservation Project Garden by the Garden Conservancy, a national organization that saves and shares outstanding American gardens.
