Mena Mark Hanna is the founding dean and professor of musicology and composition at the Barenboim-Said Akademie in Berlin. He received his Ph.D. from Merton College, Oxford, where he studied musicology and music composition. Prior to coming to Berlin, Hanna was assistant artistic director and dramaturg at Houston Grand Opera and visiting scholar in musicology at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music. As a composer, he has had premieres at such venues as Institute for Contemporary Art, London; Festival Acanthes, Metz, France; the 92nd Street Y, New York; and the Festival degli due mondi, Spoleto. He is the recipient of the Marshall Scholarship, the John Lowell Osgood Dissertation Prize, and Merton College’s Prize Scholarship.
