Patricia Covo Johnson was born in Mexico City where she lived until moving to Houston in 1973. She earned a BA in art history from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She was art critic for the Houston Chronicle from 1981-2008, and has written articles for Artspace, Southern Living and ARTnews, among other publications. She is the author of Contemporary Art in Texas (Craftsman House, Australia, 1994) and the catalogue on Mexican prints and drawings for an exhibit she curated for MFAH. Twice nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in criticism, Johnson also wrote a biography of her late husband, Lucas Johnson, as part of a monograph published by the Houston Artists Fund in 2006.
