John B. Boles retired in 2019 as the William Pettus Hobby Professor of American History at Rice University, where he taught for 38 years. He is the author of the critically acclaimed biography, Jefferson: Architect of American History, and continues researching and writing on the founders and formation of the U.S. Government. He was the editor of the Journal of Southern History, and the author of University Builder: Edgar Odell Lovett and the Founding of the Rice Institute (Louisiana State University Press, 2007; paperback, updated edition, 2012), published in conjunction with the university’s centennial.
