William Middleton, author of the recent acclaimed biographies of Karl Lagerfeld and Dominique and John de Menil, draws on his background as a journalist to research the private lives of public figures. His fascinating books illuminate his subjects and their milieu, celebrating their influence and laying bare their humanity. In this course we will hear how Mr. Middleton approaches his subjects and weaves compelling and complex narratives from their lives. Already at work on another art-related book, he will give us a glimpse into his next project. Prior to becoming an author, Mr. Middleton enjoyed a long career as an editor and journalist based in New York, Paris, and Houston, writing for the New York Times, the New York Times Magazine, Vogue, House & Garden, Esquire, Texas Monthly, Travel & Leisure, Departures, and the International Herald Tribune. He was the fashion features director for Harper’s Bazaar and the Paris Bureau Chief for Fairchild Publications, overseeing W Magazine and Women’s Wear Daily.
