December 1: Putinism emerged in the aftermath of the Soviet collapse amid market reforms that impoverished millions, the largest peacetime deindustrialization in history, and fears of further territorial disintegration fueled by the war in Chechnya. Against this background, Vladimir Putin, first elected President of Russia in 2000, came to symbolize a national resurgence for a significant part of Russian society.  Despite current social unrest and widespread expectations that massive Western sanctions would trigger economic collapse, Putin’s political and economic system has demonstrated remarkable resilience, even as the war in Ukraine enters its fifth year. In this course, Alexey Golubev, associate professor in the University of Houston Department of History, continues his exposition on Putinism as a historical, political, social, and economic phenomenon and the future of Russia after Putin’s eventual departure from the world stage. What then for Russia?
