If you had to select 100 artworks from the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, which ones would you choose? How does one even begin to whittle down a collection stuffed with nearly 80,000 wonderments from all over the world? That was the assignment Houston writer Rainey Knudson gave herself last year, in honor of the MFAH’s 100th anniversary. For 100 days, Rainey wrote 100 words each about 100 objects she selected from the museum’s permanent collection on her Substack blog The Impatient Reader. One year on, her personal project has now been published as a handsome book by the museum. Join Rainey for this special tour as she visits her favorite nooks and crannies at the MFAH, highlighting some of the works featured in The MFAH 100. Attendees will receive a paperback copy of the book, which Rainey will be delighted to sign as we finish the morning in the museum’s cafe.
Rainey Knudson is the founder of Glasstire, the oldest online-only art magazine in the country. In 2019, she stepped down as publisher of Glasstire after 18 years at the helm. She edited the 2021 book One Thing Well: 22 Years of Installation Art, about Rice Gallery. Rainey has written for Texas Monthly, the University of Texas at Austin, the National Endowment for the Arts, and other places. Her blog The Impatient Reader can be found on Substack, and her forthcoming book The MFAH 100, featuring 100 works from the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, will be published in late 2025. Rainey also can be seen sometimes telling stories live at The Moth in Houston.
